HC: you like being uncomfortable
...Yeah, actually, now that I think of it.
Living in an extreme environment makes you get real comfortable with being uncomfortable real fast. And that's great advice to give people I reckon—"get comfortable with being uncomfortable." Because life is full of discomforts, and there's no harm in being uncomfortable. The best thing I think anyone can do is learn how to become comfortable with being uncomfortable, and how to ignore their discomfort.
I grew up in an environment where summers routinely edged into 45c+ with no aircon, where I had greater chances of getting heat stroke indoors than outside. Y'know that rule of "don't leave kids in hot cars"? Yeah you also shouldn't leave kids in an unventilated caravan where the stagnant air temperature is 40c. So I spent all my time outdoors in the blistering sun and heat because at least there I had air circulation and didn't feel like I was suffocating. I'd tend the chooks and water the garden and all that fun stuff and drop a good percentage of my body weight in sweat alone from all the manual labour I was doing in the heat.
And it taught me resilience. In winter I'd freeze my balls off because it'd drop below freezing, especially at night. And I'm fine with that! I enjoy that! I come away from it a stronger man.
Anyway. Everyone should learn to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. It's good for your brain and for managing difficult situations, whether it's coping with your physical environment (temperature or sensory or even just someone being obnoxious in your general vicinity) or your mental environment (such as coping with stress). Discomfort has never killed anyone, so it's a good part of self-discipline to learn.

Hiii! Can I request Kaeya with a gn!reader who can handle the heat, but can't handle the cold because they have a frail body/gets sick easily? (Can be platonic or romantic, your choice) Please take your time with this request, and feel free to delete it if you don't want to write it 💗
i am the exact opposite i melt whenever it gets too warm [sob] but also. it gets way too cold here sometimes i just want some peace :///
Tumblr media
Unfortunately for you, Kaeya is a dick about it at first. He doesn't know the effect it has on you but just knows he loves seeing you jump from the feeling of his cold fingers on your skin.
As far as he understood, you should be fine. He's seen you deal with the brutal summer heat with ease, or stand right up close to campfires without worrying about getting too warm so to him you could handle some cold.
It took you a few tries but when you finally explained to him that for your benefit, it would be absolutely amazing if he could leave you alone or try not to freeze you out he felt pretty guilty. He's going to do his best but he does tend to run colder, keeping that in mind very time he tries to mess with you.
"Kaeya!" you gasp as you feel his hands sneaking onto your waist, grabbing his wrists and pushing them away as he cackles evilly behind you.
"What? I can't greet my favourite person with a friendly tap?" he continues laughing, sitting down next to you.
"I really need you to stop," you finally sigh, fiddling with your hands as the look on his face drops a little.
"You're too cold for me! I can't deal with it and I've been trying because I don't want you to feel bad, but really, it's too much."
He takes your words seriously, nodding a little as he begins to apologise.
"Sorry. I thought you'd be fine. I'll do my best not to bother you too much like that, alright?"
"Thanks for understanding. I really appreciate it."
When it comes time for the cold season he knows not to try and make too many outdoor plans. Everything he comes up with can easily be done indoors, only willing to take you outside if you're dressed for it and if it's relatively warm.
It shows just how considerate he can be, refusing to let you feel left out even if you can't join the rest of the city in their typical shenanigans.
He always comes over with something for you to do in your place, more than happy to spend time with you and only you. He won't say it but he also really enjoys being able to have your full attention, heart beating happily in his chest whenever he sees your smile.
"It's cold out today, isn't it?" he says as he passes you a cup of hot chocolate before sitting down in front of the fire.
"Even I was starting to feel it and I usually never do!"
You smile at him and take a sip, humming happily when you feel it warm your insides with a gentle sweetness.
"Yeah. I didn't think you'd be able to come over today on account of it being this cold. I'm glad you did though." You say the second part so quietly you're not sure if he heard it, not seeing the slight flush on his cheeks.
"Of course I'd come. There's very little here that would ever truly stop me from visiting you and I mean that. I treasure every moment we spend together and I'm not going to waste any of them."
Kaeya finds the blanket you've left on the couch, throwing it over the two of you as he leans into your body. He waits to see if you'll reject his body, glad to see that his cold wouldn't be bothering you too much today. Instead, you pull him closer to you and hold the blanket even tighter around your shoulders. You lean against him, watching the flames flicker as you languidly sip your hot chocolate.
"If it gets too cold you can spend the night. Everything's already ready for you and you've already left enough of your stuff here to be comfy I hope."
You don't notice his eyes on you, keeping a careful watch to make sure your body stayed warm. He was ready to make you something to eat just in case you presented any symptoms of a cold that he could remedy immediately.
"It's alright for now. Let's just stay warm and catch up."

I'm going to say this once. Just once.
There are places where this doesn't make sense. I live in one of them.
I live in Aotearoa New Zealand, in one of the smaller (and colder) cities. Aotearoa differs from the US in a number of respects that shift the risk-benefit profile of trying to keep a cat indoors.
First, we don't have any natural predators capable of killing a live adult cat. No snakes whatsoever. No alligators, coyotes, wolves, bears, or anything. Our biggest predatory birds are themselves about the size of cats. (There used to be one big enough to attack humans, but it went extinct centuries before Europeans brought the first cats here.)
Second, there has never been a recorded incidence of rabies in this country.
Our roads aren't the safest in the world, but they're safer than American roads. It's pretty rare for dogs to be let out unsupervised, especially big ones.
We do have native birds that outdoor cats prey on, so there's that. In human-adjacent areas, though, we also have rodents, which the native birds are not good at defending their nests from, and which tend to get more numerous when there aren't cats around.
So while there's still good reason to want to keep cats inside, it's less urgent here than in the US. But there's also pressure from the other direction: it's harder to keep cats inside here.
See, New Zealand has home heating and air conditioning the way the US has a healthcare system: the conservatives think it's a luxury that people should pay for themselves, and the left, even in government, has to battle for months for the tiniest concessions.
Much of Aotearoa can get fairly hot in the summer, and humid with it. Much of it is also cold, and wet, in the winter. We live in unheated, uncooled, leaky, mould-ridden houses. We have developing-world levels of childhood rheumatic fever.
While we're waiting for the politicians to get their heads out of their arses and fix the problem, we're advised to keep doors and windows open in the daytime to let the air circulate, both when it's hot in summer and during fine periods in the winter to try and keep the damp and mould at bay.
We also don't have screen doors.
Have you ever tried to hold a cat inside whilst keeping all the doors and windows open for moisture control?
Our household has had two cats move out and settle at neighbours' houses, and honestly in both cases it was better for them, because neither of them could get on with our alpha cat (who sadly passed two years ago -- at an advanced age, at the vet's, to spare him the pain of end-stage kidney failure, in case you were thinking of asking).
One of them moved in with an elderly man who was living alone in a housing unit that officially didn't allow pets, but she captured his heart and became his reason for living his final half-dozen years of life. The other started spending time with another neighbour, which we found out when he came home with a flea-collar on that we hadn't given him, and gradually made her house his home.
Tumblr media
I can think of a really easy solution to this problem.

Swimming outdoors in winter? Some love it. But bring a swim parka
At 6:45 a.m., with temperatures in the 30s, I step onto the outdoor pool deck at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase YMCA, a towel draped over my shoulders. The sky is adorned with pink streaks, and the moon is still visible. A layer of steam hovers over the heated water as I immerse myself and start swimming, the contrast of crisp air and lukewarm water creating a thrilling sensation.
To some, the idea of swimming outdoors in near-freezing conditions may seem crazy, but experts assure that winter swimming in a heated pool is safe and beneficial for health. For the dedicated community of winter swimmers joining me each day, there's nothing quite like the experience.
Massage therapist Valerie Campbell from Kensington, Md., who swims outside at the Y five mornings a week year-round, attests to the invigorating feeling: "It's a joy to feel so refreshed. We enjoy the sunlight, the mist over the water, even the brisk wind at times, which can cool the soles of our feet as we kick. Sometimes, indoor swimmers venture out, but they never last long."
Outdoor winter swimming can also be a spectacle. Financial analyst Robert Judson from Bethesda, Md., recalls a particularly memorable evening swim: "It was a bitterly cold night with the stars out. It started snowing lightly halfway through my usual leisurely mile. It was magical. Perhaps too magical. Maybe it was a dream."
While non-swimmers and even those who prefer indoor swimming may not fully understand the allure of winter swimming, they appreciate the enthusiasts. Professor Kate Macomber Harsh, who swims indoors at the B-CC Y, expresses gratitude: "I'm actually glad that there are so many nuts who love swimming outside. That makes the indoor pools much less crowded."
Despite the exhilarating feeling, experts note that, from a health perspective, swimming in a heated outdoor pool provides no additional benefits compared to indoor swimming. The calorie burn remains unaffected by cold air, but swimming in cold water can increase the calorie expenditure if shivering is added to the activity.
In the warm waters of the B-CC Y outdoor pool (usually maintained between 80 and 83 degrees), the risk of hypothermia is minimal when swimmers are in motion. Unlike in unheated outdoor waters, a swimmer's body fat percentage is less critical in heated pools.
According to Mike Tipton, a professor of human and applied physiology, shivering disappears during exercise at an intensity above "light activity." In the B-CC Y's outdoor pool, where the water is kept comfortably warm, there is little danger of hypothermia.
Swimmers should distinguish between water and air temperatures, as the cool air becomes a non-factor once submerged. Scott Trappe, head of the human performance laboratory at Ball State University, emphasizes, "You stay submerged. It's perfectly fine. It's fantastic, in fact."
Different swimmers have varying preferences for water temperature. Slower swimmers may find an 82-degree pool ideal, while faster swimmers like Anna Alberini, an economics professor, prefer water cooler than 80 degrees but not below 70.
When the water temperature drops into the 70s or lower, the risk of hypothermia increases. This is why many open water swimmers train in heated outdoor pools during the winter.
Swimmers should take precautions and acclimate gradually when the water temperature is below 70 degrees. Michael J. Joyner, a physiologist at the Mayo Clinic, advises, "If the temperature is under 70, get in for a few minutes today, then a few minutes tomorrow, and so on."
Both the B-CC and Silver Spring YMCA facilities offer year-round outdoor swimming. Lifeguards, dressed in warm clothing, rotate every half-hour and have a heated shack to protect them from the cold, wind, and rain. The pool closes when the temperature drops below freezing or the wind chill falls below 25 to prevent accidents on the icy deck.
Wearing a wetsuit is unnecessary for heated pools, as it is most effective in water temperatures below 76 degrees.

Riverport Brewing Company, Clarkston WA
30 June 2023
Temperatures were nearing 100º on this full-sun afternoon so I was really looking forward to enjoying some cold microbrews in an air-conditioned space. Oh well.
Riverport is the only brewery in this area, as far as I can tell. The beers were cold when poured although they didn't stay that way for long as the indoors was wide open to the outdoors. I actually sat outdoors in the shade just to have the breeze.
Tumblr media
None of these were so marvelous that I'm going to bother looking up details, so I'll just tell you the style and what I thought. The beers zig-zag across the board; the back row left-to-right is numbers 1, 2, 4, 6, and the front row has 3 and 5.
Kölsch - It's a Kölsch, not the best I've had but far from the worst. I took a crowler of it for the evening.
Blonde - Haha, it's a Blonde Ale! But it was pretty bland in my opinion, neither good nor bad.
Bullseye - This was a Pale Ale and arguably the best of the flight.
Seven - An IPA, but less hoppy than the Bullseye, and that puzzled me. It was good, but it struck me as more of a mildly hoppy lager than an IPA.
Haze - This is their attempt at an NEIPA but it wasn't at all well balanced; the bitterness was far too prominent and there wasn't enough fruitiness from late addition hops or dry hopping.
Dirty Larry - The bartender said I should definitely try this one. It's a lager with lemon, but I didn't really get that at all -- it just tasted off to me.
Tumblr media
Rather than leave things at just the flight and a crowler -- and especially because there just isn't anything else around -- I added a pint of the Bullseye Pale Ale. It was fine although the heat of the day warmed it up far too quickly.

Beau
Draco Malfoy x fem!reader
Summary: Draco is especially clingy on a hot summer's day.
Warnings: floof! Tooth rotting fluff. This is weird. Very, very weird.
A/n: I'm very happy today for no apparent reason, so I felt like writing fluff whilst in the mood.
"Y/N." Draco softly quips for the fifth time in 10 minutes, a determined pout on his lips and his dark brows furrowed together. "Yes Draco?" Y/N questions folding her copy of the Daily Prophet in half. "It's nearly noon time and I have not recieved one, not even one single kiss from you the entire day!" Draco whines tossing his pale arms in the humid air. "Oh my poor darling. Must be awful to my big baby hm?" Y/N hums making her way over to her grumpy beau.
"Yes." Draco huffs folding his arms across his puffed out chess, his foot impatiently tapping the hardwood floor. Y/N cups his cheeks and presses a soft kiss to his lips before pulling away with a soft smile dancing on her perfect lips. "Better now?" She asks stroking his pale hair with one hand, the other still lingering on his jaw. "Much better." Draco grins like a child who finally got their treasured piece of sweet (candy). Well, let us not ignore Y/N's motherly instincts towards Draco, or the fact that on certain occasions he calls her mommy.
A soft laugh escapes Y/N's lips as she looks down at her beautiful boy. "What? Why are you laughing?" Draco pouts up at her. "You amuse me, Draco." Y/N sighs stroking his ever so prominent cheekbone with her thumb. "How so?" Draco smiles, slightly tilting his head to the left. "Well, for instance you're wearing a long sleeve tailored suit on a scorching hot summer's day." Y/N laughs shaking her head. "Style comes before comfort my love." Draco smiles cockily making Y/N playfully roll her eyes.
"Why don't you put comfort before style? Just for today?" Y/N questions her blushing beau. Before he can protest Y/N presses a finger against his lips. "Before you try and protest I can see you flushing from the heat Draco." Y/N smiles and leans down, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Alright fine." Draco huffs getting up. Y/N giggles and drags him to his wardrobe, gently pushing him onto his bed. Draco watches in amusement as the love of his life gets him cool clothes to wear, love evident in his eyes.
"There we go darling." Y/N hands Draco his clothes, which he reluctantly accepts. When Draco doesn't move Y/N raises her brows. "Dress me." Draco pouts as fiercely as he can. "What- no Draco that's ridiculous." Y/N huffs in confusion. "Please!" Draco whines pouting harder. Y/N sighs and gives in. "Alright fine. Only because you're irresistible." She smiles making her way to him. She already knows the mood he's in, and that certain mood requires a lots of attention and lovely words. "My beautiful boy." Y/N comes to stand between his legs. Draco's heart swells with pride at the praise.
Y/N slides her hands onto his shoulders and removes his tie, all while pressing kisses to his forehead. Once the tie is off and the fist button of Draco's shirt is undone he sighs in relief. "I was right hm." Y/N laughs unbuttoning his shirt, which he gladly shrugs off with a subtle nod. "As per usual my love." He smiles up at her. Draco holds his arms up as Y/N pulls the short sleeve shirt over his head. She slides down onto her knees and unties the laces of his tailored Oxford shoes (I don't know what brand he wears, probably worth my arms and legs expense, but i think this is a shape more than a brand). Once both shoes are off she places them neatly next to the bed.
Y/N slides Draco's trousers down and urges for him to get up, which he does. He slips into the shorts with her help and sighs happily once his feverish skin has less layers on. Y/N goes to remove his socks but he stops her "No. There might be dust. I'll keep them on.". Draco has always been fussy about hygiene, and he despises the idea of being barefoot indoors, let alone outdoors or in the mud. Y/N rolls her eyes playfully at her beau and stands up. "Come, let us go outside my darling." Y/N holds out her hand with a gentle smile. Draco doesn't protest as he takes her hand and follows her outside. "Why are we here my love?" Draco questions trying to sheild his eyes from the bright sun. "To bask in the summer sun of course. Vitamin D is important for your health darling." Y/N calmly explains, watching birds soar by the pond.
"Do I look like I ever get any?" Draco sighs turning to his lover. "That's why we're outside my love." Y/N smiles.
The rest of the day was spent under an old oak tree with their names carved on from when they first started dating, Draco's head peacefully resting on Y/N's lap until they retrieved to their much desired shelter inside. "Y/N?" Draco questions resting his chin on her shoulder. "Yes darling?" She hums setting her book down. "I really like your eyes." Draco sighs staring at her sparkling orbs, his resembling the same love. "Thank you, and I adore yours as well." She smiles stroking his hair from his eyes. Draco smiles and shuffles down on the bed pulling her down with him.
And not long after the pair, cuddled up despite the heat, were fast asleep.
A/n: this has been in my drafts for a few days so I finally finished it today, but it feels kinda rushed.

I completely agree with this. One thing my family did do was fix all our cats before they were allowed outdoors, back before it was commonly advocated to keep them indoors, and we also captured and fixed all feral cats that wandered onto our property. I also have my own horror stories regarding outdoor cats, one of which is involving a cat allowed to be outdoors freely and another involving a cat who was raised to be indoors due to a health issue.
I'm going to start with the older of the 2 stories, the one with health issues.
Her name was Honey (because her nose was honey colored), and she was a blue point Siamese. The sweetest kitty we had at that time, but her front claws developed wonky and it hurt her to walk, and the vet recommended declawing her, making clear we all understood that they would not be suggesting this if it wasn't for the best of the cat. So we did it, and she was forever an indoor kitty because of this.
Since she was stuck inside all the time, she became friends with our cockatiel Tiki, who had unfortunately been abused by his previous owners and would snap at or bite anyone or anything that got too close to him or his cage. But with Honey, he was different. I've lost it now, but I got a picture of him with his beck poking out of cage and her pressing her nose to it. They also would talk to each other, it was seriously the sweetest thing. Trust me, this is relevant. In the early 90's, I think '93 or '94, there was a blizzard in my area that literally trapped us in our house for 3 weeks (the cars for 4 weeks) and day before we got trapped, something startled Honey and she ran out of house. Very quickly my dad and sister lost her, and we never saw her again. Tiki was devastated too, so much that he even let some of us pet his beak through the cage bars, along with sometimes calling out for her. He eventually made friends with another of our cats.
That, however, isn't the instance that made me never want to let my cats outside, it would be years later after losing my kitty Precious, however, to understand his story, you have to know his mom's story.
Her name was Dusty, because she was abandoned by a feral at my mom's work and named due to needing a bath when she arrived. My sister raised her up, feeding and weening her over the next few weeks. Thankfully this all happened right at the start of summer holiday, so she had the time. One thing we didn't allow with Dusty was letting her outside, afraid she'd go feral and run off. However, we had a male (named Mister) in the house who was born about the same time to one our cats as she was, and at that time, vets in our area wouldn't fix cats until they'd gone through heat at least once.
Unfortunately, that meant she got pregnant because we failed to keep her and Mister apart. She had a litter of 2, who I helped her give birth to because it happened when I was home alone and she had trouble. One kitten's sack didn't break and she didn't know how, and I think I was like 8 or 9 when this happened, so it was pretty intense for me. These two kittens were fine, but after they were weened, she went feral, escaping from the house and intentionally avoiding capture thereafter, with one of them being the one mentioned above who made friends with Tiki. That's how she got pregnant a second time, which luckily lead to us catching her and getting her fixed, and Precious was one of the kittens in this litter.
Precious was a silver tabby, another litter mate was a brown tabby I named Garfield (she was very grumpy after being woken up) and a black and white boy my dad name Groucho because the black marking on his mouth made him look like Groucho Marx. Now, as I'm writing this all out, I realize that what happened to Groucho is also another example of why cats should be indoors only, because he died after being run over because he was sleeping on or on the side of a wheel of my grandmother's car, and even though she always checked for cats under the car and under the hood before driving anywhere, he was mostly black and she didn't see him. She was devastated after this, to the point that we weren't allowed to talk about him or the comedian because it would make her cry.
Back to Precious, he was devoted to me. By this, I mean he'd let me do whatever I wanted to him, which usually meant letting me hold him longer than he wanted and not scratching or hissing at me to let him, except once, and he immediately began licking the scratch, so it felt more like he was marking me as his than anything else. He also would snuggle with me when I went to bed, and to make sure he was waiting for me after my nightly shower, I would put him in my bed, head on the pillow and blanket tucked around him, telling him to stay there until I got back, and he would, except once. I know this for certain because I shared the room with my grandmother and she couldn't understand how and why he listened, as well as watching the single time he didn't stay, but she said he wiggled out of blanket, left the room to eat and drink and use the litter box, then came back, wiggled back into place, all before I came out of the bathroom. I never knew until after his death, when she told me as we were reminiscing after his burial.
I was 13 and we'd moved about a year earlier to a new place which was closer to other homes than the last one, namely being 1 of 2 duplexes off a lane in a very wooded area, with a few other houses around that. (As a side note, another of our cats, Charley, got herself stuck up a tree twice but after that, she stayed inside by choice.) We were miles from a road or street, so we didn't think we'd have to worry because our cats rarely went that far. Or so we thought. One day Precious wasn't back by dark, which wasn't like him, he always was home before dark. I remember it was a Thursday during the school year, so I couldn't go out and try to find him the next day, but we had one of my dad's brothers and his wife staying with us, so my aunt went out looking for him the next day, finding him miles away on the side of a road. I won't say how we found him, but we had most of his body to identify and bury. It was scaring, nonetheless, and I was so devastated that I couldn't handle going back to school for a week, unable to stop crying most of that time, and sleeping fitfully.
After this, I tried keeping all of our cats inside as much as possible, I didn't want to lose anyone else, they were part of our family, but it was hard when all of them were raised being allowed outside when they wanted. I thought I'd have more success with the cat my dad bought a year or so later, who I got to name because of Precious' loss, and we found out very quickly that she was profoundly deaf. I named her Anya, a Russian name meaning grace, because she was part Russian Blue, since we found out later that one of parents was a rare fertile albino. Unfortunately, she got out a few times, but each time, she was found either in our neighbor's car or under our side of the duplex the next morning. Each time she got out when my dad came home around midnight, since he worked late, and finding her was hard because she tended to go right under our side of the duplex. We don't know if for the times she came back out from there the next morning that she stayed there the whole night, we only know she didn't the 2 times she was found in our neighbor's car, since they had a back broken window with a garbage bag over it, which she broke both times she got in. I do know that the home she went to when we had to move years later (because the duplex owner didn't want to renew with us) and couldn't find somewhere that allowed more than 2 cats (we only had 5 damnit) kept Anya inside. Same with the other 2 cats we didn't keep, and also same with the 2 we tried keeping that we couldn't after the fleas began to stay in our carpet instead of on the cats.
So yeah, if I ever get a cat again, it will be indoors only, but right now, because my partner has a mild allergy, I won't ask her to put any money towards a cat and until I have a stable(ish) job, I cannot afford to get and care for one.
Also sorry if you started reading this and it became too much, there's a reason I put this under a cut.
i'll tell you what converted me to being all-in on keeping cats indoors only:
living for a year and a half in a rural area with a sudden feral cat colony explosion on the property.
i moved in with my folks for a bit and at that time, one (1) stray cat mama had taken up residence on the property, but was too feral to let my mother anywhere near her. but especially after she brought three kittens around, mom fed her and the kittens in hopes they'd grow trusting enough she could catch for spay and neuter at the minimum. momcat stayed mean and hella wary, but the kittens would hang around a little nearer and play with my mom via long stick, but still wouldn't come close enough to touch or catch.
unfortunately, two of the three kittens were girls and started having kittens of their own before further progress was made, shortly after i moved in. and that was pretty much instant doom.
there were so many kittens. SO MANY. multiple litters. every time we turned around, more kittens.
we fed them. we hunted for and located the kittens every time anywhere on the property and would move them to a repurposed doghouse anytime a mama cat had them somewhere else, so that they could grow up human-socialized and we could spay/neuter them when they were old enough. (also it was a handy tactic to push the issue of the mamas getting more used to/trusting of us themselves. only really worked with one of them, though.)
and we watched them die.
we watched litter after litter of kittens never make it to the age they could be spayed or neutered. the moms stayed, for the longest time, too skittish to more than briefly touch, much less catch and crate for a vet visit.
it sounds like a silly joke to say i have kitten-related ptsd, but i absolutely do.
too many goddamn times i'd walk out of the garage and find the carport and gravel drive strewn with tiny bodies. others simply went missing, never to be found.
one in particular, i wish i hadn't found, and the visual literally haunts me still, almost a decade later.
i saw so many kittens die of snake bite, spider bite, wild dogs, birds of prey, hit by cars, respiratory illness, covered in fleas and eyes crusted with infection.
and we loved them all. scrimped for antibiotics if the vet could be convinced to give it to us despite our being unable to bring them in. bought flea collars and ointments. we cared for them and fed them and petted them and played with them, brushed their fur and cleaned up their little faces, put ice in their water in hot summer, rigged a heating lamp in their house in the winter.
and they died. horribly. that property is pocked with unmarked graves of kittens and cats.
all the best intentions, not enough resources, and it didn't matter anyways because the population went from three to almost twenty (at times, over thirty) in the blink of an eye.
they died and died and died. our hearts broke over and over again. the stress and anxiety wore us down like sandpaper. i think, by the end of it all, we managed to find less than 10 of them all homes, including batman the disabled kitten i found a home across the country through tumblr.
it was carnage and tragedy, frankly. and we were helpless.
it only ended because they started dying faster than they could be born, and because we finally caught the two remaining mom cats in traps and got them spayed.
the points about outdoor cats being invasive predators devastating to local wildlife populations is true and valid and important.
but i know cat people, and cat people who don't know better than to let cats outdoors. what matters to you is the cat itself, generally. the cat being happy and taken care of.
keeping cats outdoors, letting them outdoors, is not taking care of the cats. it's not protecting them. it's not giving them any happiness or invigoration that couldn't be provided to them as indoor-only pets with just a little research and effort.
they die. they get ill. they get hurt. they're at risk of predators, and cars, and disease, and carelessly cruel children and deliberately cruel adults. they're at risk of disappearing on you because someone else saw a cat outdoors and intervened to give it a better, safer life not in conflict with the local environment.
and if that offends and angers you that someone would just take a cat they saw roaming outdoors, even collared, and that it sounds like i'm endorsing that, i am, but not if you intervene and be that person yourself for your own cat.
if what matters to you is doing right by your cat because it's family and a living creature whose happiness and health and safety is important to you,
keep them indoors. not part time. always. exclusively.

Your post about keeping dogs outdoors gave me a question—I have a great pyre x Australian cattle dog. She's got pretty fine fur, not very dense, ~2" long. Looks like a byb Anatolian lmao. Anyways—i keep her out a lot right now, but as a Californian in Idaho I'm afraid of her getting too cold in the winter/snow and I have no idea how to gauge this or tell what's appropriate for her. Got any advice?
I'm not the best person to answer this on grounds that I'm from an entirely colder climate (Northern Minnesota, in sled dog territory), and dogs do adjust to temperature like we do within reason.
The outdoor dogs I was around growing up were always supplied shelter, usually an insulated dog house filled with bedding such as straw. The shelter should be out of the wind and raised off the ground. When the weather was supposed to dip below zero or include dangerous windchill, they were also given free access to a heated building like a garage or the house.
My personal comfort level for leaving a dog outside without access to a heated building is 20-30F for a dog who is well-adjusted and has shelter, depending on coat type.
Dogs don't tend to be shy about wanting to come in or stay out, so you can trust most of them to know their limits when they're free access indoor/outdoor. But for full-time outdoor dogs, I might refer to folks who keep LGDs and sled dogs for specific advice? Any good input from that side of dogblr?

I'm trying to set up a grass type gym in Cherrygrove city, Johto but I'm unsure on how to create a suitable environment for grass types so close to the ocean. What could I do to make a good environment for my pokemon without going against the local ecosystem?
Ok! Well this entirely depends on your team, and the Pokémon who will reside inside. Each species has specific needs and wants, and some do not respond well to salt air at all.
So let’s run through the basics. For your delicate jungle species (Tropius, Bounsweet, Lurantis ect), carnivorous kinds (victreebell, carnivine, vileplume ect) and sensitive to the cold types (Maractus, cacturne, sunflora ect) youll need a protected indoor space.
Carnivorous kinda need bog conditions, humidity and full sun to be happiest, using rain water to keep them at their best, not tap, as it contains too many other nutrients that could make them sick. They will sometimes be fine with the winter cold, some have developed a tolerance to it, though they lose their leaves and root into compost suited to their needs, and almost ““Die back” for the cold seasons. Having a greenhouse for them means you can battle them through the winter, and they won’t sleep through it half as much. They need to catch and feed on their own prey, so allow a window to open and let the bug types come on in, so your Pokémon can feed. These species should be fine without daily food, unless a doctor states otherwise. Their catching of prey and rain water combination means they don’t tend to want Pokémon food, for up to 2 weeks; this is normal and you shouldn’t worry. Their compost is specifically designed to be low nutrient, as too much can make them quite sick. It’s very quick to drain and very sandy almost in consistency. Buying this compost can be expensive and damage natrual bog’s where humans collect this resource, so consider making your own compost from other materials. A quick google will certainly help you choose if you go down this route.
Ok so jungle types need slightly different conditions. High humidity is key here, and actually a lot of them prefer half sun conditions, so a greenhouse for them would need a space with shade netting, so they can choose to get out of the blazing sun. Unlike carnivorous species, they love rich and well drained soil. Leaf mould is your best friend when it comes to feeding these species, and when given shelter from the cold, they don’t tend to go dormant half as often as an exposed Pokémon of the same type. They do enjoy a liquid feed as well as Pokémon food, so once a week give them a good soak with either a high nitrogen feed (for lush green growth) or high potash feed (for fruits and flowers), and one good Pokémon food meal. These species don’t tolerate the cold as much, but some species have developed ways to combat it, for example Tropius has a mountain variant that can withstand the ice and snow quite well if they have shelter. They often find a cave or nook for winter and only feed when the snow stops. Average Tropius do not like it though so just observe them, see what they can handle.
You may like to use desert or dry soil condition species, so a different space needs to be made up with sandy free draining soil, and a low humidity. Too much water for these species can rot their body and cause great damage. They feed quite happily on berries and Pokémon food, and don’t mind an occasional liquid feed, but you’d have to find a desert species feed, all good garden centres carry organic varieties, so take a look. This space should have full sun, and plenty of space for activities, these species can be wanderers so regular exercise is more important here. In winter reduce watering to half the amount of the summer, and try to keep the temperature at about 20-25 degrees C (not too sure what that is in F, sorry bud). I manage this by simply putting my toarkoal in the desert house over winter. His ambient heat keeps them all very happy. You could use any docile fire type for this, to save electricity and cut your bills down.
this all excludes grass types that can not only survive in winter conditions, but are happy outdoors even in snow. Having a space where you simply replicate a garden, with fairly good quality soil, no heating or cooling in place, and average water levels and humidity will cover these. There are endless variants of Pokémon that can tolerate unusual conditions, but I will speak only of the pure breed species for ease, as I could go on for hours otherwise haha. This basic grass space is easier to maintain if you install a watering system on a timer. We have them in every greenhouse on the island, and it saves us a lot of time. You should provide spaces with shade, so those who burn easily can take shelter, and also open areas for sun bathers, who feed off the light. A pond installed means you can allow some Pokémon to just come and go from the moist soil conditions, and it will encourage a natrual eco system to develop even indoors. Flowers and trees will replicate their natrual habitat and give them things to interact with and enjoy, and there’s of course the area to battle, which I would advise planting sparsely, as battles can easily destroy decorations or plants close by. You’d be paying a lot to replace them, it’s not worth it.
I would suggest to have an isolation unit. When a plant Pokémon gets sick it can infect others of its kind, so have a space to pop anyone who’s got any questionable symptoms while you wait for them to get better. Plant perry trees about and let your Pokémon eat what they want, unless you notice they start to get a little overweight or sick from it, then take action. Normally grass types have the most well balanced diets, and their low calorie intake means they tend not to have this problem, but always keep an eye on everyone, just in case. We once discovered a oddish with a citrus allergy, simply because he was eating Oran berries and soon after was struggling to breathe well. We overlooked it because he came in with a respitory infection, and soon after we figured out the Pokémon centre diagnosed him all wrong.
Things to watch for are discolouring leaves, blemishes, colour changes, wilting, crisping, shrivelling and dieback. These can all lead to an unwell Pokémon and are your ‘tells’ in this type group.
The indoor spaces will be protected from the ocean air, just a simple glass house for daily activity will do, and battling in that air won’t bother them long term, so long as they can retreat to their preferred greenhouse. The species that can tolerate ice and snow, tend to also be fine with sea air. Planting a tall hedge around your gym will certainly help, as it gives you a good wind break and you won’t get the brunt of it. Yew is a wonderful option for hedging as it’s great for wildlife, produces berries, is evergreen, and doesn’t suffer the dreaded box-blight that other species get. It’s basically a die-back issue and you’ll just have to cut bits our and replace them. A lot of hassle if you’re a busy gym leader.
This should helps you start, there’s so many specifics to each species, just test things out. Make a note of where your Pokémon is from and replicate it as best you can.
Species I would avoid having by the ocean are lurantis, and lilligant. Two very fussy species that need specialist care.

10. That’s cool, I guess. Now tell me something you don’t like.
I'm not a fan of the ocean. Or snow. Or the cold.
I blame the fire in my veins.
Julian: don't worry my dear, I'll keep you warm.

God where do I even start.
Ropeplay. For sure. I love to see them squirm. Bit of a voice kink. I'm a vers bottom so I like to try things out.

Stage Preparation / Episode 1
Tumblr media
Tsumugi: H~m. Although I bravely left the room...
I have no idea where to go, since I don't usually go on such a luxury cruise ship.
Sora: ·····Yes.
Tsumugi: (......? Isn't Sora-kun acting strange? Until just a little while ago, he was having so much fun in his room, but he's suddenly lost his energy.)
(I'm sure he's worried about Natsume-kun, but I feel like that's not all...)
(Perhaps Sora-kun is also tired. Let's finish this quickly and let him rest.)
Umm...Isn't there somewhere we can talk? Hm? That's Shu-kun over there?
O~i, Shu-kun.
Shu: Hm? Aoba and Chibisuke? What is it?
Tsumugi: Is there a place where we can have a stage meeting? We don't have much time and need to discuss this as soon as possible.
Shu: If that's the case, you can use the lounge here. It's an open place, but the seats are wide apart. It's suitable for unexpectedly important meetings.
Make sure you're well prepared and don't show an awkward stage
Tsumugi: Yes, of course. Please rest assured that I will protect Shu-kun and anzu-chan's face.
Shu: Well, it's the boy's choice. It will end in vain, won't it? Speaking of which, where's the kid? I can't seem to see him.
Natsume: Natsume-kun is not feeling well right now and is resting.
Shu: Not feeling well...? Is he okay?
Tsumugi: Yes, I think it is a mild heat stroke and he will recover after some rest. He must be tired after he stayed in a hot place for a long time..
Shu: Ah, the kid probably isn't good at outdoor activities. Well, I can't say anything either.
Tsumugi: I am too. Me, Natsume-kun, and Shu-kun are all indoor people aren't we~
Now. Well then, let's sit down over there and start the meeting. Sora-kun.
Tumblr media
Tsumugi: Sora-kun? Are you listening?
Sora: eh? Ah, I'm sorry! Sora didn't hear you.
Tsumugi: Are you tired, Sora-kun? Do you want to stop the meeting today and rest now?
Sora: it's alright. Sora is fine~? So let's have a meeting, Senpai
Tsumugi: That's fine, but....
Aren't you worried about something? Ah, of course, I know you're most worried about Natsume-kun, whom we left in the room.
But apart from that, there seems to be something else that is worrying Sora-kun. Is something wrong?
Sora: ...........
Tsumugi: You may be able to find a clue to a solution by talking to someone.
Sora: .......um. Shisho~ hates summer. Sora heard him mutter that. Maybe this time–maybe I don't like summer anymore!
Tsumugi: Ahaha. It's true that Natsume-kun doesn't like summer. But as expected, that worry is exaggerated.
It's all right. There are a lot of people in this world who don't like summer. Right? Shu-kun
Shu: Non! Point to yourself before you point to me.
Tsumugi: Eh~? I'm not good at it either, but I think I'm better than Shu-kun or Natsume-kun.
Shu: hm, me too. It's hot, and it's easy to fall apart even if everything is arranged. Pursuing perfection is often troublesome in this season, so it's something I'd like to avoid if possible
Well, that's what it is, Chibisuke. There are a lot of people who don't like summer, so you don't have to be so serious about it.
Sora: No it's not! Until now ·····Well. Sora felt like he was avoiding it
There are so many things happening this time that sora might have come to hate summer itself.....
Uh~ It's hard to explain properly~?
Tsumugi: (Certainly speaking, from the beginning, he didn't like filming on a southern island, either.)
(Did he really want to avoid summer...)
(No..... Maybe he wasn't avoiding summer. But then what is it?)
(Come to think of it, Natsume-kun's homeroom teacher once told me when I was at Yumenosaki-)
Could it be that Natsume-kun can't swim?
Sora: Eh!!? W-W-W-Why do you think so?
Tumblr media
Tsumugi: H~m. Natsume-kun doesn't seem to be avoiding summer, but rather wants to avoid something related to summer.
When I was at Yumenosaki, Natsume-kun's homeroom teacher asked me to attend his PE class.
I thought maybe because he can't swim, he started avoiding summer and things related to summer......
Well, I also skipped other classes on a whim, so it's just a guess~
Sora: S-Sora doesn't know anything! He doesn't know that Shisho~ can't swim·····!
Tsumugi: Ahaha. From the way you look, it seems like you admit that I'm right.
What do you want to do for Natsume, Sora-kun?
Sora: Well, sora want to cast a spell that will make Shisho~ fall in love with summer!

Is It Too Hot To Sell A House In Texas?
The warm weather is already in full swing this summer, so I'm wondering if it's too hot to sell a house in Texas. People prefer lounging indoors in the air conditioning or outdoors by the pool when the temperature is 95 degrees or higher. They may not want to drive around looking at homes for sale this time of year.
My house does not have a pool. It is small, only 1200 square feet and in need of some updating. Many large, beautiful homes with pools and three- or four-car garages are selling fast, even in this hot climate. But fixer-uppers are not necessarily that popular.
I need to find a homebuyer who is motivated to purchase my Texas property as-is now, no matter what the weather is outside. Fortunately, my air conditioner works fine!
We Pay Fast Buys Homes As Is in Texas
The professional homebuyers at We Pay Fast are not concerned about the weather. They work with sellers all over the country, including those with fixer-upper houses like mine. When a seller calls 1-800-WePayFast (1-800-937-2932) or sends an email to [email protected], an investor will respond to their phone message or email with a phone call within 24 hours . We Pay Fast is interested in buying homes in any condition, in most of Texas.
We Pay Fast is an experienced team of investors who buy and sell real estate regularly and have the ability to pay cash and close quickly. That means there is no waiting for buyer mortgage loan approval, which is the common cause of long delays in closing traditional home sales. Selling to We Pay Fast would bring me great relief in the Texas summer heat.
It's not too hot to sell my house in Texas to We Pay Fast. So, I'll call 1-800-We Pay Fast (1-800-937-2932) and hope to close the sale of my home in as little as one week to ten days.

Note
How on earth did you guys survive summers without air conditioning? Mine went out two days ago and I'm about five minutes away from giving myself an ice cube enema just to make it through the heat.
it wasnt fun, thats for sure. though i’ll admit i never quite got to the point where that sounded like a good idea.
mostly we acclimated–humans do this neat thing where our bodies can adapt to hot environments, but nowadays people just jump from air conditioned environment to air conditioned environment and dont build up that tolerance by staying in the heat. but back then, we just got used to it. that only goes so far though.
the summer of 1936 was a nasty one. i mean, horribly, terribly, melt your bones hot. nobody wanted to do anything, it was just so hot. the whole city just wanted to find a shady spot and lie still until the heatwave passed.  people who had fire escapes off their apartments would sleep on them at night, so they wouldn’t have to be indoors, where it was even hotter and there was no moving air. neighborhoods broke open fire hydrants and cooled off that way–i once saw a man in a three piece business suit walk right into the spray from a hydrant, looking blissful as anything. some people carried umbrellas or parasols. people found bodies of water and got in them–rivers, ponds, public fountains, which was neither safe nor sanitary. places that sold cold drinks were packed, and vendors selling shaved ice on the streets sold out.
but the best thing was the pools. that summer, the WPA opened 11 enormous new public outdoor swimming pools across the city. back then, they were the peak of technology. four of them were in brooklyn, and stevie and i tried out all of them. it was the social site of the season, so i was in fine form.
it was great–stevie could swim pretty well, despite not having much muscle mass, and the chemicals didnt bother his asthma too much. whenever the two of us werent working, we were at one of those pools. really, it seemed like most of the city was in the water trying to cool off.
one thing we didn’t have? sunscreen. that wasn’t really around until the war. im a bit darker than steve, and even i was lobster red after the first few days. i made it work--red is my color.
stevie, though. steve was so red he could stop traffic.

The kitten I’m talking about is the one we found while having all the debris and crap taken out of my yard. She was so young she still needed body heat/a heat pad, couldn’t poop by herself, and had to be fed from a dropper. This is
She's about 9.5 months old now. My mother keeps saying that since she's feral, she's 'used to' things outdoor cats are, that she's constantly in survival mode, that she'll always bite and scratch, not like getting pet, and be more vicious than an indoor cat. She keeps bringing up putting the kitten outside and letting her be with other cats 'like her.' My roommate has mentioned adoption for the kitten once or twice, if not just releasing her.
However
She likes lying next to my mom in her room, dozing on the bed while the tv plays and my mom does work on her computer.
She likes sleeping ON my mom's husband and cries whenever the two of them leave the house. He is her human. She has adopted him. This upsets my roommate, who is officially the kitten’s owner.
She doesn't scratch me or bite me (nips, but no blood), but nor is she affectionate or dozing with me like with my mom. But if she’s already dozing and I go lay next to her, she doesn’t mind.
She's very active, jumps and climbs and gets into stuff. My idea is that this is because she is a kitten, but this apparently annoys everyone else in the house, who continuously go ‘what the hell are you doing now, demon child?’
Unless she's sleepy/lethargic/feeling lazy, she doesn't like getting pet on the head AT ALL and doesn't seem to notice if you pet her back (she just walks away like you're not even touching her).
But to her 'mom' (my roommate)
She scratches her hard enough to draw blood - it seems like every time my roommate picks her up this happens.
She chews through any cord my roommate has. She has never touched any cord I own (or my mom, or her husband).
And while normally I'm like 'she's a cat,' there are some times where she gets really touchy/hissy/mean and seems to hate everything, but I just go '....cats be like that sometimes' and leave her be and later, she's fine.
So I just want to know someone else's opinion. Is she just, as my mom keeps suggesting, genetically feral or something? Or is she just a kitten who, for whatever reason, hates one particular person?
If an outdoor/maybe feral cat has a kitten and within days that kitten is picked up, cared for by people, lives indoors with indoor cats, is that kitten still considered feral? Can that kitten grow up like any indoor cat? Should any behavior problems be attributed to who her parents were?
